Choosing & Understanding Your Vispring Mattress

At Vispring, we believe that the best support and true luxurious comfort can never be rushed, and although each luxury handmade mattress may take longer to make, we know this is the best way to do it. With over 120 years of expertise, our craftsmen and women use tried and tested skills to handcraft the finest sleep.

If you ask anyone who has slept on a Vispring pocket sprung mattress, they will agree with us that it is one of the most important investments you can make. Investing in sleep is investing in your health and well-being, and while the initial cost of a high-quality mattress may seem high, it is useful to consider the Cost Per Use (CPU). Your Vispring mattress will last for years, or with the right care, decades to come, so the cost for each great night’s sleep will be worth every penny.

We are proud to produce the highest quality products and not be part of the fast furniture trend. Our mattresses are all handmade by a team of artisan bedmakers in our Plymouth workshop in the UK and are sold by over 500 retailers around the world.

While we always recommend trying mattresses in-store before making your final decision, we’ve put together a helpful How to Choose Your Bed guide on our Guides page. It covers everything from selecting the right tension to understanding how a mattress should feel, making it easier to find the perfect fit for you. You can read it here.

The right size depends on your height, sleeping habits, and how you share your bed.
A larger mattress enhances comfort and reduces motion transfer – especially for couples. See our guide for Choosing the Right Mattress Size for You.

Vispring makes mattresses in four different tensions, Soft, Medium, Firm and Extra Firm. Tension is, of course, all down to personal choice, but we would always ask you to consider your body weight as the main factor first.

It’s always best to test each bed in one of our stores for at least 10 minutes by lying down in the position that you usually sleep in, and turning over a few times.

If one tension does not suit both you and your partner, a combination mattress might be perfect for you. A combination mattress allows you to have two different tensions, for example, one side medium and the other side firm.

If there is a bigger difference in tension preferences, a zip and link mattress could be better suited. This would allow you to zip together two smaller mattresses in different tensions, for example, soft and extra firm..

If you sleep on your side, you’ll likely benefit from a mattress with a softer feel that allows your shoulder to sink in gently. However, it’s essential to choose a mattress that still offers full-body support. To help you find the ideal balance of comfort and support, we recommend visiting one of our authorized retailers, where a Vispring bed expert can offer personalized advice. We’ve also created a helpful guide, How to Choose Your Bed.

That is a common misconception. If you suffer from a bad back, you need to find a mattress that provides the correct support and comfort. To ensure you find the right mattress that provides you with the optimum level of support, we recommend you visit one of our authorised retailers, where you can get professional advice from a Vispring bed expert.

Vispring mattresses come in four spring tensions to accommodate various comfort preferences. If you and your partner have different tension needs, a combination mattress (available in 150cm and larger) can offer a solution, with two different tensions on each side, such as medium and firm. However, if your feel preferences vary more significantly, a zip and link mattress is ideal. This option allows you to combine two completely different, smaller mattresses with different tensions, such as soft and extra firm, for a completely tailored sleep experience.

In general, the more pocket springs that are contained within a mattress, the more supportive it will be. A higher spring count offers more contact points with your body and will better contour your shape. For these reasons, all Vispring mattresses are manufactured with an optimal balance between spring count and filling quantity, ensuring the best sleep experience.

In an open coil mattress, the spring coils that form the mattress all move together as one unit, so if you are sleeping next to someone and they move in the night, you will move too. Vispring’s luxury pocket sprung mattresses are made with individual Vanadium steel springs that are encased in fabric pockets that are nested together in a honeycomb formation. This enables each spring to move independently from the other springs, which creates more support and less movement of the mattress when you or your partner move during sleep.

Mattress Construction, Materials & Compatibility

While some competitors may offer more springs at a lower price, Vispring mattresses are crafted with full-height pocket springs, offering superior support and comfort. Unlike mass-produced alternatives, Vispring mattresses are handmade in the UK using luxurious natural fillings like wool, cotton, and horsehair, ensuring durability and long-lasting comfort. Investing in a Vispring mattress means choosing quality, craftsmanship, and long-term value for your sleep.

Yes, pocket spring mattresses offer superior support and comfort. Each individual spring in a Vispring mattress moves independently, providing tailored support for your body. This design also reduces movement transfer, making it a great choice for couples, as you’re less likely to disturb each other during the night.

Vispring mattresses are not allergy-certified, but most of the materials we use are naturally hypoallergenic. While we can’t entirely rule out allergic reactions to some natural fillings, we can assure you that our mattresses are free from harsh chemicals and toxins, providing a safe and comfortable sleep environment.

Vispring mattresses are traditionally handmade without the use of adhesives or solvents in the manufacturing process. Additionally, the mattress fabric (ticking) is treated with M-Pure, a chemical-free, bio-based fire retardant, ensuring a cleaner and safer sleep environment.

Yes, you can use a Vispring mattress on your existing bed base, provided it is in good condition. If you have a slatted base, ensure the slats are no more than 7.5cm (3”) apart.

Yes, a Vispring mattress pad is recommended to protect your mattress and bed base. It helps prolong the life of your mattress by preventing indentations and shielding it from moisture caused by wooden slats.

As Vispring mattresses are made with natural materials, a slight ‘organic’ odour may be present when new. If this occurs, simply open the windows to let the mattress air out. Pull back your bed linen daily to allow the mattress to breathe, helping any moisture to evaporate and the natural fibres to settle after a restful night’s sleep.

Aftercare, Durability, & What to Expect

Every Vispring bed is carefully handmade and can last a lifetime if you carry out a little maintenance. To see our guide on how to keep your mattress and divan in top condition for years to come, see our guide on how to care for your Vispring mattress.

Vispring mattresses are filled with the finest natural materials, which settle at the heaviest contact points over time. To help maintain its shape and longevity, we recommend turning your mattress twice a month for the first three months, and then once each season thereafter to ensure even distribution of the fillings.

Yes, it is normal for a pocket sprung mattress to form around your body contours. Natural settlement and regular turning will help reduce compression marks over time.

Our approximate guidelines for natural settlement on turnable mattresses are as follows:

6 months – 1 year: 4cm
1-2 years: 4.5cm
2-7 years: 6cm
7-15 years: 7.5cm
15 years+: 9cm

At Vispring, we take pride in the craftsmanship and high quality natural materials used in our mattresses, which is why we offer a 30-Year Guarantee for added peace of mind against structural failure, faulty workmanship, and defective components.

Vispring mattresses are built to last, but the lifespan of your mattress depends on several factors. Proper care will help extend its life, but ultimately, comfort is subjective, and only you will know when it’s time for a new mattress.

Thanks to the exceptional quality of materials and craftsmanship, a Vispring mattress can provide many years of the finest sleep with proper care. How long you keep your mattress is often down to personal preference and maintenance, with many of our customers enjoying their Vispring mattresses for decades.

It’s important to note that the lifespan of your mattress isn’t the same as our Guarantee. The Guarantee covers any unlikely defects in workmanship or components.

For more information, please see our Vispring 30-Year Guarantee Terms and Conditions here.

Vispring luxury mattresses are crafted with generous layers of upholstery and natural fibres, so they may take a little time to settle and for your body to adjust.

We recommend giving it at least one month to allow the mattress to soften and for you to fully adapt to its comfort.

It’s normal for a pocket sprung mattress to appear slightly smaller than your divan base on arrival. During transit, mattresses can contract by up to 10cm, depending on shipping conditions. Rest assured, it will return to its normal size with regular use. Gently dressing and plumping the mattress can help speed up the expansion process.

Your Vispring mattress is covered against structural failure and faulty workmanship under our 30-Year Guarantee. To be eligible, you must register your guarantee; unregistered products are not covered.

If you experience any issues during the guarantee period, please contact the store where you made your purchase and provide details of your concern.
